Simple Present Explanation + Exercises

Hello, class! 💚💚
So today we started revising the Simple Present.👀

This is the tense we use when we:
- want to talk about our routine / habits
E.g. Meli rides her motorcycle to school.
- want to talk about facts that are always true (for example, if we want to say something scientific)
The earth goes round the sun.
- want to make a summary of a story, book, movie, etc.
In chapter one, Susan meets her new neighbour and becomes her friend.
- want to talk some activities which are called states. States describe activities that are generally long, or that they last long, and that do not require an action from the person. Examples of states are the verb "be" and the verb "have".
E.g. They have two children.
They are both thirteen.
Ivan doesn't have a sister.
- want to talk about likes 💗or dislikes 💔:
E.g. I hate going to school.
Sally doesn't like mate but she loves coffee.
We adore listening to music.

The question now is, how do we make sentences with this tense? Easy peasy.

To make affirmative sentences we need:

Subject + verb ----- with S / without S
E.g. She learns English. / They study English

The verb takes an S according to the subject. Take a look at the picture below.
So, if the subject is he, she or it, the verb takes an S. Some verbs change when you add the S to them, for example, "have" changes to "has"
She has lots of clothes.
Other verbs need an E before the S, like teach:
He teaches Maths.

To make a negative sentences we need an auxiliary verb. The auxiliary verb is in charge of saying no. The auxiliary verb of the Simple Present tense is do. But, be careful: the verb "be" is its own auxiliary. So, if you need to say no with the verb "be", you will say: isn't, aren't or 'm not. (You know this already!)

Subject + don't / doesn't + verb in infinitive.
We use don't or doesn't according to the subject. Take a look at the picture below.

So, if the subject is he, she or it we need to use doesn't (which is the contraction of does + not). If the subject is I, you, we or they we use don't (which is do + not altogether). The verb "be" is an exception to this rule: when we say no using that verb, we directly say: isn't, aren't, or 'm not.
E.g.
She doesn't live in Villa del Parque.
They don't like dancing.
She isn't my friend. We don't talk anymore. ( 💔)

To make questions we need the auxiliary verb and also an interrogative word.
Interrogative words are words we use when we need information.
What, where, when, why, how much, how many, how long, etc.
We use these interrogative words if we need to make a question because we need information, for example:
What is your name?
Where do you live?
Why is the sky blue?
When is your birthday?

If we just need to know YES or NO, we skip the interrogative word and start with the auxiliary right away:
Is your grandmother Italian?
Do you live near the school?
Does she like listening to music?
Is she in the volleyball team?
Does he play tennis?

To make questions then, we need:

[Interrogative word] + auxiliary verb + subject + verb in the infinitive
